Mesh Winter Pool Covers
This type of winter pool cover is made from a porous material that allows melting snow & rain to seep through the pool cover into your pool, while keeping leaves and other debris out. The main advantage of mesh winter pool covers is that they prevent standing water on your pool cover. This enables any debris to simply dry up and blow away and also prevents your pool from becoming a breeding ground for mosquitoes* in early spring.

At pool opening time, simply remove the pool cover and clean your pool. Mesh winter pool covers are most popular in areas with significant snowfall. They're also ideal for use in regions where water is allocated or costly – you can use nature's water to fill your pool! Mesh winter pool covers are easier to handle & are lighter in weight than winter pool covers made from a solid vinyl material, so you'll have an easier time installing / removing your winter pool cover.

*It is recommended that mesh winter pool covers be removed in early spring to prevent the breeding of mosquitoes (and other potentially infectious insects), as well as algae growth.

Solid Winter Pool Covers
Solid winter pool covers are made from a non-porous material that prevents rainwater, snowmelt, leaves, debris and other material from getting into your pool while it is closed for the off-season. Solid winter pool covers keep your pool water clean & clear all winter long, and also prevent sunlight from permeating into your pool, which prevents the growth of algae in the spring. With a solid winter pool cover, water is removed from the top of the pool cover during the winter months using a cover pump. Solid winter covers are usually heavier & a bit more difficult to handle than mesh winter covers, but your opening your pool each spring can be significantly easier because debris was kept out of the pool over the winter.

The Basic Facts about Winter Pool Covers

  • Winter covers are designed to lay flat on the water's surface. They should never be stretched tightly over the pool or "tee-peed", as this can void your warranty and / or ruin your winter cover. If you are more interested in a pool cover that can be stretched tight over the pool, consider one of our safety covers instead of a standard winter cover.

  • Winter covers come with between 3' and 5' of extra overlap to easily cover your pool.

  • Order your winter cover by pool size, not based on the size of the cover. To ensure proper fit, accurate fit, you will need to measure your pool before ordering.

  • We recommend our customers buy the highest quality winter cover their budget will allow... it pays dividends! Also, consider the additional warranty coverage, it's peace of mind for only pennies on the dollar.

  • For pools near lots of trees, consider a Leaf Catcher. Simply place it on top of your solid or mesh winter cover before the leaves start to fall, then remove it in late November for a clean winter cover with no messy, decaying leaves in the spring.

  • In-ground winter covers are manufactured with loops for water tubes (which secure the cover to your pool & prevent damage from heavy winds during the off-season). Water tubes are available separately, and will be required to install your in-ground winter cover. Some in-ground winter covers are available as kits (complete with water tubes), which can save you time, money & hassle. Water Tubes should be filled to approximately 75% capacity. We recommend filling them with pool water, as this will both help lower your water level and keep algae to a minimum. A submersible cover pump is ideal for filling water tubes.

  • Above ground winter covers come complete with vinyl-coated metal cable & winch (cable tightener), which is used to secure the winter cover to your pool. Cover clips are available separately and are a great item for above ground pools in areas with extreme winter weather. Some above ground winter covers are available as kits (complete with cover clips), which saves money, and can extend the life of your winter pool cover. Above ground pools located in cold climates must also use an ice equalizing air pillow under the winter cover. Pillows should be filled to approximately 75% capacity. Inflating them a few days before you cover the pool is a good idea, to ensure there are no leaks. Simply secure the pillow to the center of the pool by tying it with a nylon cord. In high wind areas, we suggest cover seal to prevent damage from heavy winds.
